Digital Printing from Design to Final Product is How Labels are Made

Have you ever wondered how your labels are printed? Each label goes through a precise procedure to generate an eye-catching completed result, whether it’s a basic design or a delicate construction. Here’s how to turn a label design into a completed product label.

Step 1: Prepress and label quotes

The first step in the digital printing process is to gather information and create a quote. As a digital label printing company, we’ll need the following information: the size of your label, the content you want your labels printed on, and some quantities of your overall label order. We’ll send you a quote for the project based on that information. If everything looks good, we’ll need your artwork so we can send you a digital proof before printing.

After all of the approvals are received, your artwork is delivered to our prepress department for approval. Before anything travels to the printer, the prepress process serves as a last line of defense. This group examines different aspects of your art file to ensure that it is ready for printing. Before we print your labels, we make sure the fonts are drawn, spot colors and appropriately designated, photos are incorporated, and any other important aspects are addressed.

The prepress team will also examine any components of the label that might be enhanced. If your label has a barcode, for example, they may print a test copy to verify how effectively the barcode scans. They’ll double-check with you if you wish to change the barcode or surrounding areas to boost the search.

The prepress team will notify your account manager and send back your file if they find any opportunities for improvement or concerns with the art file, ensuring that your label is completely prepared for the printers. It’s time to progress to the next stage.

Step 2: Manufacturing

When the art file is ready, it is transferred to our cutting-edge HP Indigo digital printing presses. Digital printing, unlike traditional printing technologies, does not require the use of plates to transfer images onto labels. Instead, the HP Indigos scan digital files and apply graphics directly to label material using electrically charged particles in the inks. Digital printing saves you money on image costs and setup fees by reducing the need for plates, and it also delivers faster turnaround times, saving you time.

During the printing phase, the procedure is straightforward: print. The label material is supplied in large rolls that are fed through the printer, which prints your design onto your chosen material. After the rolls have been printed, they must take any necessary finishing processes and be cut for use.

Step 3: Completion and Die Cutting

After printing, the labels are fed through a finishing machine. This machine can give a label a variety of treatments, from embossing or hot foil printing to protective upper layers like laminates and UV varnishes.

The finishing procedure also includes die cutting each label and slitting the huge roll into manageable smaller rolls. We’ll print the labels side by side to cut down on waste and printing costs. The labels roll through a cutting section of the finishing machine after being die cut, where the rolls are slit by small cut into two or three rolls at the end of the press.

Step 4: Packaging and Winding

It’s time to rewind each roll now that they’ve been done and split to a reasonable size. The labels roll out of the finishing equipment in great quantities, which might be a problem for some applicators. That’s why rewind machines reroll your labels in precise numbers to make them more manageable for your company.

Following rewinding, the packaging department performs a last quality check to ensure that your labels are in good working order. Your labels are packed and delivered out after all is clear so you can use them for your products.
